What does the future hold if you have a DUI conviction?

If law enforcement stops you on suspicion of drunk driving, you will face several penalties. The entire experience will be unnerving, but you assume you will just deal with it and go on with your life.

But life as you know it may change as a result of a DUI conviction.

Work issues

In addition to a fine and the possibility of some jail time, you will lose your driving privileges for a period of time. How will you get back and forth to work? How will your employer react to the news of your DUI?

If driving is one of your responsibilities, you could lose your job. And you may find it difficult to get a new job when you have a DUI mark on your record. Most employers perform background checks on applicants, and when a recruiter sees your DUI conviction, he or she may choose another candidate with a clean driving record.

Academic problems

Perhaps you are in college and plan to attend graduate school. Once again, that DUI mark on your record may prevent you from being accepted at the college of your choice. If you are interested in certain professions, such as law, nursing or teaching, your DUI conviction could disqualify you from acquiring the state licensing or certification you need.

Results of a felony

If the circumstances surrounding your arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol are such that you are convicted of a felony, you could lose certain liberties. For example, you could lose the right to obtain a passport or own a firearm, or your voting rights could be impacted. You may also be ineligible for government assistance, such as federal housing.

Seeking help

As you can see, an arrest and subsequent conviction for drunk driving may be much more problematic than you anticipated. But remember you have rights. If you are arrested for DUI, explore your legal options to keep your future plans on track.
